The sculptures at Akshardham Temple can be described as a "history of Hindu civilization in stone". From the giant statue of Bhagwan Swaminarayan, a 19th-century Hindu spiritual leader enshrined in the main hall, to the 49-foot-tall bronze statue of Nilkanth Varni at the entrance of the park, each statue carries religious narratives and cultural symbols. For example, the statue of Nilkanth Varni stands on one foot with the sole facing up in a yoga posture, recreating the saint's 8,000-mile ascetic journey from 1792 to 1799, which lasted for seven years. Its dynamic details and religious implications are eternally frozen through the copper texture.
Inside and outside the temple, the elephant sculptures interpret the auspicious symbols of India with different materials and shapes: the elephants on the stone pillars shake bells with their trunks, their eyes are smart, and the patterns on the back felt are clear; the bronze statues by the pool convey the power of tranquility with a humble smile. These works not only showcase diverse themes such as Hindu Vedic astrology, mythology and legends, but also push Indian art's pursuit of detail to new heights through geometric patterns and intricate decorations.
As the designer and caster of the temple statue group, Jiangxi Tongqing Metal Crafts Co., Ltd. has injected Chinese craftsmanship genes into this cross-cultural religious building with its "specialized, sophisticated and innovative" technical strength. Since its establishment in 2002, the company has been deeply involved in the field of arts and crafts manufacturing. In 2018, it undertook the Indian "Statue of Unity" project, casting the world's tallest (182 meters) outdoor bronze statue, and accumulated casting experience in super-large religious sculptures.
In the Akshardham project, the Tongqing team faced two challenges: first, it was necessary to transform the imagery of Hindu mythology into metal language, such as the dynamic balance and expression portrayal of the Neelkanth Varni statue; second, it was necessary to overcome the difficulties of cross-border collaboration to ensure that the statue fits perfectly with the stone building carved by Indian craftsmen. To this end, the company adopted a precision lost wax casting method, and used 30 patented technologies to control the temperature of the copper water, the casting speed and the accuracy of the plaster mold, and finally achieved "zero error" docking between the statue and the main body of the temple.
The statues of the Akshardham Temple are not only a presentation of religious art, but also a witness to global cultural cooperation. Jiangxi Tongqing uses metal as a medium to integrate the spiritual core of Hinduism with traditional Chinese casting technology: the surface of the bronze statue is specially oxidized to imitate the texture of stone, forming a material dialogue with the marble and granite of the main body of the temple; the layout of the statue group follows the Hindu cosmology, while drawing on the spatial philosophy of "different scenery with every step" of Chinese gardens, so that believers and tourists can experience a progressive religious experience during their visit.
Today, this Hindu holy place standing in New Jersey has become a link between Eastern and Western civilizations. The statues cast with ingenuity by Jiangxi Tongqing Metal Crafts Co., Ltd. not only give the temple an artistic vitality that transcends time and space, but also show the world the profound heritage of Made in China in the field of cultural inheritance and innovation.
